Jonah Hex #66 Review

Tagged with: Jimmy Palmiotti  Jonah Hex  Justin GrayJonah Hex #66

In the newest issue of Jonah Hex by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, Jonah makes his way through a horrific blizzard to a small town that welcomes him with open arms, but is it really as peaceful and welcoming as it seems?

Jonah and his bounty makes their way to a small town where they find a church with a very small congregation, but an overly friendly priest.  The townsfolk offer shelter for the bounty (though Jonah’s not too worried about them seeing how they are all wanted dead), and the priest takes Jonah to the local whorehouse.  There, the anorexic whores try to kill Jonah, leading him to kill pretty much everyone in the building.  When the rest of the townspeople come after him, he realizes these people have turned to desperate measures to keep themselves alive – eating his bounty and horse.  If Jonah’s not careful, he’ll be next.  He hides out in a hungry family’s home as the priest and a few other townspeople encroach.  He kills them and heads off to find some food for the family.  He finally gets a dear, but it’s too late…  The family, in dire need of food, turn to cannibalism as well.

This issue is definitely in the same vein as the series as a whole.  It’s classic Jonah Hex dealing with tough decisions and doing the right thing even if he doesn’t really want to.  Realizing he cannot let this widow and her children die without trying to do something, he spends the night in a blizzard in order to get them enough food until spring.  Nevermind his feelings on the townspeople who selfishly and deliberately turned to eating each other.  I mean, you could kinda guess how Jonah would feel about all that, so his true character comes out when dealing with the starving family.

While this is a solid story and fits right in with the usual one-and-done Jonah Hex style, this is one I would have liked to have seen play out in two or three parts.  It would have been pretty cool to see Jonah in the role of the hunted while dealing with trying to help the family.  In the end, after stopping the crazed people from the town, it would have been too late to prevent the family to make the same choices the town made leading to her husband’s death and so on.  That’s just my opinion as far as the story goes.  In the art department, Fiona Staples joins Gray and Palmiotti and adds her own touch to the characters.  I think with a few more issues, I could really like Staples’ style, but I am also pretty partial to Jordi Bernet.

Overall, pretty good issue.  I would like a little extension on the story, but it hits the right notes and should be fairly well liked by fans of the series and of Western genre.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsStaples' touch on the art was different, but enjoyable. Gray and Palmiotti's story is just what we should expect from them and this series.I really would have liked to see a little more story and break from the one-and-done nature by giving us a two or three part arc.
