Avengers #12 Review

Tagged with: Avengers  Brian Michael Bendis  John Romita Jr.Avengers #12

It appears Thanos is holding the last hidden Infinity Gem, and Parker Robbins is intent on possessing it.  But is everything as it appears?

The Avengers are hot on the trail of Robbins, but Thanos has his full attention currently.  Thanos offers Robbins a proposition…  Let him have the Gems and he’ll make sure Robbins has everything he could ever wish for.  Robbins calls the tyrant’s bluff and the ruse is revealed – it was Dr. Strange all along.  Behind Strange is the entire Avengers force coming to stop Robbins once and for all.  The Red Hulk beats Robbins into submission and just when Robbins threatens to wipe Red Hulk’s existence away with the reality gem if he doesn’t hand over the power gem, Hulk reveals he no longer possesses it.  In fact, the other five stones are in the Gauntlet, which is being worn by Iron Man.  The other gems overpower Robbins’ and the Infinity Gauntlet is complete again.  Instead of creating a peaceful and hollow world for everyone to happily live in, Stark uses the power responsibly by putting Robbins back in his cell and wishing the Gauntlet out of existence…  or maybe not.  Two teams get new members as Red Hulk is given official membership in the Avengers and a surprising new face takes Black Bolt’s vacated spot in the Illuminati.

Brian Michael Bendis really shows what he’s capable of doing with a good idea.  He’s often had good ideas but his own overuse of banter and wit often spoils the party for me.  Not here.  Not once was there a gross over usage of dialog in this issue.  At least not in the sense that it totally distracted from the story as a whole.  In fact, I’d have to say the banter was actually considerably lower in this whole arc.

What’s actually most important to take away from these first two arcs is that regardless if John Romita, Jr.’s art hasn’t been that good or the first arc kinda fizzled, it’s that these stories have the Avengers facing serious alpha-level threats for the first time in a long time.  While The Mighty Avengers series covered that as best it could, the Marvel Universe after Civil War was weird and the Avengers weren’t themselves.  Now it seems the Heroic Age, and maybe this series more than any of the other three, is restoring what the Avengers do and what they should be dealing with.

I know I often criticize a lot of what Bendis does with the Avengers, but I’ve never denied that he could tell a good story.  This is one of those times that every little bit of what he can do shows through.  My only issue with this series is with Romita.  I’d love to see what another artist can do, but I’m glad that I can at least sit back and read a good story.  To me, this Infinity Gauntlet arc definitely sets the bar for what this series and New Avengers can be.

The real test will be next week, when issue #12.1 comes out.  The .1 project has been kinda hit and miss with me.  This one gets things set up for what the Avengers will have to deal with post Fear Itself.  So before we dive into the tie-in with Fear Itself, I’m really looking forward to what Bendis does with the Spaceknights since both he and I are huge fans of ROM.  I’m actually really excited!

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsVery nice conclusion proving this series is really getting back to what the Avengers do best... dealing with serious threats and really kicking the bad guy's ass as a unified team.Romita, Romita, Romita. I'd like to see someone other than JRJR draw this series so the art can get on the same level as the other Avengers books. Rating95%
