Batman: The Dark Knight #2 Review

Tagged with: Batman  Batman: The Dark Knight  Bruce Wayne  David FinchBatman: The Dark Knight #2After making us wait for almost three months for this second issue, David Finch doesn’t give us a whole lot more to chew on.  That’s not to say that this is a bad issue, far from it.  It’s a very good issue, and a seamless transition from issue #1.  The Penguin is up to his old tricks, thinking he has Batman trapped in a corner, ready to kill him, which he tries to do with his goons.  Not surprisingly, his goons couldn’t hit a stationary target if they tried.  Their ineptitude, combined with some awesome Waynetech, get Batman out of this jam.  The Penguin, the coward that he always is, runs away, but Batman catches up to him.  In a rare display of madness, Batman breaks a few of his bones.  If you’ve read the issue, you’ve seen how Alfred is shown freaking out about it in one-half of a panel, but I’m surprised that more isn’t made of this rare display of Bruce Wayne’s/Batman’s show of craziness.  Killer Croc appears out of nowhere, and Batman is finally overwhelmed.

In a connecting scene, Jason Blood is shown changing himself into his alter-ego, Etrigan the Demon.  I’m not a expert on this character, but I do know that he hasn’t been a prominent character in the “Bat World” area of the DC Universe.  That being said, later in the issue, he’s shown picking off another vagrant.  It will be interesting to see how this all connects to the main plotline regarding Dawn Golden.

Speaking of which, Batman wakes up in an abandoned building with a TV.  Killer Croc knocks him around a bit, then Batman gets to watch some TV, i.e. whatever camera feed is set up in the hospital where Penguin is convalescing.  (Not sure who in the hospital allowed the Penguin to set up a camera and video feed to who knows where).  And the story ends with Etrigan taking another victim.

One thing I’ve noticed about Batman’s costume in this series is the emphasis on the yellow oval on his check.  The artist seems to make it a point to have it stand out.  In fact, it practically glows, like a miniature beacon.  Let’s hope it doesn’t get in the way of Batman getting to the bottom of Dawn Golden’s disappearance.
