Thor #621 Review

Tagged with: Matt Fraction  Pasqual Ferry  Salvador Larroca  ThorThor #621

Matt Fraction wraps up his first arc as Thor’s writer with a bang.  In this issue, Pasqual Ferry gets some help from another Fraction partner, Salvador Larroca.  So, let’s find out how Odin and Thor decided to get rid of the monstrous World Eaters, shall we?

Thor, using the giant avatar Odin created for him, is headed to strike down the World Tree.  With the Tree destroyed, the World Eaters would not have a place to conquer (or so it would seem).  Just as Odin is about to fall to the king of the World Eaters, Thor splits the World Tree in two, banishing the World Eaters to a place in the tree that conforms to the rules of Asgard, making them subjects and not the would-be conquerors of Asgard.  As Broxton wonders at the light show that is now the World Tree, Asgard celebrates a new dawning.  Meanwhile, the World Eaters lay in wait, but unaware they are in a world with a resurrected Tyr and Balder who are both ready to exact their revenge on the beasts.

Ultimately, I liked the arc.  I think Matt Fraction has a good understanding of the scale of Thor.  After Kieron Gillen’s run, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Fraction since this was a much different type of book than, say, Iron Man’s.  While some may question who the World Eaters are/were, I pieced together that this gang of red monsters were the antithesis of the Asgardians.  I felt they always wanted a place in our universe, and they may not have ever been truly bad guys as much as a group looking for a place to crash.  When Asgard’s appearance on Earth disrupted their spot in our universe, the World Eaters saw their opportunity to take it and live.  I found myself asking, “What if the Asgardians were in this same situation?”  Even good guys can be violent if they are fighting for something.  We naturally want to root for the defenders, but sometimes we don’t understand the attackers’ point of view.  So, while the we saw the World Eaters as monsters, I’m not sure they are necessarily.  It might have just been their situation.

And that’s something that’s got me wondering about Fraction’s upcoming Fear Itself, but you’ll see more about my thoughts on that very soon…

Ferry’s art impressed me in this story.  The style might not be like we’ve seen before on the series, but the nuances of the visuals, particularly with the World Eaters, caught me looking at panels and particular scenes for long stretches of time.  Ferry’s style may not be perfect for every book or story, but I felt it really worked in this story.  At the very least, his style is interesting.

That being said, I was surprised when I realized Salvador Larroca worked on this book.  I began to wonder why, and theories started sprouting.  We already know this story was supposed to happen right after Siege, so the idea that this was going to be the final arc of the series before reverting back to Journey Into Mystery didn’t exist originally.  The ending we got today may not have been the original ending.  So, was Larroca brought in to give us the bit with Kelda?  We he given the opportunity to tease us for Kieron Gillen’s series?  I’m not thinking Ferry was replaced at any time due to problems or schedule or anything like that.  I really think the end was altered in some way.  So, as we now move into the Journey Into Mystery series, Kelda’s creepy scene will likely play out a little more.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsNice visuals and a good wrap up for the two new series on the way. Overall a solid issue.Felt a little like this and the previous issue could have been combined in some way into one larger size wrap up. Rating85%
